Living in La Rochelle

CharleyCharley had been coming to France on family holidays for many years, she now lives near La Rochelle in western France and works as PA.

What made you move to France and how long have you lived here?
My family and I had been coming to France, to the properties at Rochebonne, for many years. We always loved it.

Which part of France do you live in, and what's it like to live there?
Close to La Rochelle. I love it.

What is your age?
I'm 23.

Where were you born?
I was born in Wales.

Do you work, if so what do you do and how difficult was it to find work or start a business in France?
Yes, I am PA to the author Catherine Broughton. I tried very hard to find work with French companies and, despite my qualifications and experience, couldn't even get an interview. So I was extremely pleased when Catherine Broughton asked me to be her PA..

What was the worst mistake you made when buying in France?
We bought just a shell. Everything was far more expensive and far more difficult than anticipated.

Your best tip or advice to other people considering moving to France?
Make sure there is a British community in the area but also make sure you socialize with the locals. You will need the British for support and advice, even after you have been here for years.

Did you find it hard to integrate or adjust to your new life in France and do you have any tips to help others?
Once I had met my boy fiend, who is French, it was fine. Otherwise it is very very difficult.

What's the best thing about living in France?
The weather ! Their food is not all it is cracked up to be !

And the worst?
Poor customer service - they are really quite rude - in fact the customer is always wrong as far as the French are concerned.
