Living in Brittany

Richard lives in Brittany, he is married to a French lady and works in the construction industry. Richard shares his story of moving to France and some tips on integration into French life.

What made you move to France?
I was originally coming to France with an ex partner, who changed her mind by which time my house was sold and I thought give it a go or regret it for the rest of your life.

Which part of France do you live in?
Brittany.

What is your age?
50.

Be realistic and live near a town where you can find work, don't get sucked in by the countryside.

Where were you born?
Derbyshire.

Do you work, if so what do you do and how difficult was it to find work or start a business in France?
Yes I work; I work for a French construction company. I had no problem finding a job I restarted at the bottom and worked my way back up as my language progressed and my French qualifications were obtained.

What was the worst mistake you made when buying in France?
Buying straight away and not renting first.

Your best advice for people considering moving to France?
Be realistic and live near a town where you can find work, don't get sucked in by the countryside.

Did you find it hard to integrate or adjust to your new life in France and do you have any tips to help others?
I lived on my own for about five years and this meant that I had to do everything for myself carte de sejour etc sorting out things for myself put my face around so people knew who I was. Biggest aid to integration was getting a job then the neighbours saw that I was the same as them.

What's the best thing about living in France?
My French wife.

And the worst?
Sometimes not being understood because people don't listen.
