Life in Lot-et-Garonne

Laraine moved to France looking for a new adventure and has been living here for 6 years, she lives in Lot-et-Garonne, in the Aquitaine region of South West France.

AquitaineWhat made you move to France and how long have you lived here?
Looking for a new adventure and have now been here for 6 years.

Which part of France do you live in, and what's it like to live there?
I live in Lot-et-Garonne, in Aquitaine, South West France. The weather is beautiful and there are beautiful views around every corner. There is space, safety and it's uncrowded, especially the roads.

There is excellent healthy food which is locally grown. Great restaurants and lots of free entertainment. There are colorful markets and friendly, helpful people. I have lovely neighbours.

What is your age?
I'm 62.

Where were you born?
I was born in Derbyshire, UK.

What was the worst mistake you made when buying in France?
Using an English translating agent, the cost of £5000 was not necessary, at least I did not find it to be so. The Notaire was more than helpful.

Your best tip or advice to other people considering moving to France?
Rent first if possible. As selling is not easy, making sure you are in the right place is important.

Also, take every opportunity to learn some French before you move here, it's not England with good classes in every town, and even harder to get a good class if you are retired. Most of the classes I have tried deteriorated into social clubs, mainly because the teaching is poor. You need GCSE standard classes to give you good basics.

Never be afraid to have a go with what French you have.

Did you find it hard to integrate or adjust to your new life in France and do you have any tips to help others?
Look out for flyers and posters of what is going on, there is some great free entertainment to be had. Not hard to integrate, the French want to know you.

What's the best thing about living in France?
Long reliable summers, relative peace and security.

And the worst?
Poor shopping. I used to love a day out in the city browsing the shops, it's not the same here. No such thing as a bargain, it's expensive!
