Living and working in Pays de la Loire

After holidaying in France as often as they could Andrew and his wife moved here permanently in 2003 and now live in the Mayenne department of Pays de la Loire.

Lassay-les-Chateaux in the Mayenne departmentWhat made you move to France and how long have you lived here?
We always planned to live in France one day. We holidayed here as often as we could and when my wife was offered early retirement we left as soon as we could. The UK was just getting more and more expensive and when we did the math it made total sense.

We will have lived here continuously for 6 years on 10th October 2009.

Which part of France do you live in, and what's it like to live there?
We live in Mayenne which even we had not heard of when we first discovered it and even our French friends living in Normandy were not sure where it was. We live about 2Km out of the village, we have a large pond full of carp and a trout river runs through the land. It is so quiet and relaxing, and our neighbours are fantastic.

Do you have children, if so how easy was it for them to adjust to a French school?
Our children are both grown up and had left home before we moved.

What is your age?
55.

Where were you born?
Sheffield, South Yorks.

Do you work, if so what do you do and how difficult was it to find work or start a business in France?
I joined the auto entrepreneur scheme as soon as it started and now run a computer repair service. I joined online and it was extremely easy.

What was the worst mistake you made when buying in France?
No mistakes just had to exchange just as the exchange rate dipped, cost us 10K more than it should

Your best tip or advice to other people considering moving to France?
Learn the language, the French really appreciate it.

Did you find it hard to integrate or adjust to your new life in France and do you have any tips to help others?
We were accepted with open arms and getting involved in the village events helped, my wife just missed being voted in on the local council.

What's the best thing about living in France?
Where do you start, the food, seafood in particular, empty roads, cheap rates, no road tax, no rat race, friendly people.

And the worst?
Sometimes red tape is a bit ott.
