New regulations on car number plates in France came into force on the 15th April
09. The new regulations mean that cars will now be assigned a vehicle registration
number (numéro d’immatriculation) which lasts for the life of the vehicle.
The new simplified registration system means that car owners and buyers will no
longer need to change the number plate if moving to a different department or purchasing
a vehicle from outside of the department in which they live.

When the car does need new plates owners can if desired display their department's two digit number and regional badge on the right hand side of the registration number.
