
The beautiful town of Annecy sits on the shores of Lake Annecy in the Rhone Alpes region of France, close to the Swiss border Annecy is just 22 miles from Geneva and close to the border of Italy. It is also the 'capital' city or prefecture of the Rhone Alpes. Its location makes it an ideal base for exploring across the borders.
There are numerous attractions including Chateau's cathedrals, churches and gardens.
There are a number of events held each year 2 annual film festivals, one for animation - "Le festival du film d'animation" which is in June and the "Festival du film italien d'Annecy" or the Annecy Italian film festival. Cultural events include the festival of the Lake in August and Transumance or Descent from Alpine Pasture. There is also a buzzing night life with numerous casinos, night clubs and cinemas.
There is water everywhere a bit like Venice and the lake and surrounding attractions make it perfect for watersports of all kinds. There are weekly markets & antique markets held in the Old Town. Its worth visiting the old jail pictured above it now houses a museum and holds exhibitions.
Close by there are numerous national parks one well worth a visit is the Cascade et Grotte de Seythenex about 27 km south of Annecy. An impressive cave system left over from melting glaciers there are mills and giant cauldrons and an amazing 40 m waterfall with staircases & walkways allowing visitors to reach the top. Guided tours are also available.
