The
Midi Pyrénées is made up of eight departments: Ariège, Aveyron, Gers,
Haute-Garonne, Hautes-Pyrénées, Lot, Tarn and Tarn-et-Garonne. Although French
is the predominant language there are also two regional dialects still spoken by
a few people
Occitan and Gascon.The Midi Pyrénées is an area of beautiful contrasting landscapes with huge river valleys at it's center and the Pyrenees mountains in the south which mark it's border with Spain.
Major towns include Toulouse the second largest metropolitan area in southern France famous for manufacturing the 1930's aircraft the Airbus and at one time the capital of Languedoc. Lourdes the well known Catholic pilgrimage location which is situated in the foothills of the Pyrenees.
