Languedoc
Roussillon is situated in the south of France, it is made up of the departments
Aude, Gard, Hérault, Lozère and the Pyrénées-Orientales, its capital is
Montpellier.Languedoc Roussillon was formerly made up of two provinces - Languedoc and Roussillon. It has a beautiful Mediterranean coastline and on the whole enjoys hot dry summers although the winters can be very wet. Because of its landscape of mountains and sheltered valleys it has many micro climates and so the weather can vary dramatically across short distances. To the east the region is bounded by the mountains of the Pyrenees to the west the Midi Pyrenees and in the north the Massif Central.
The Massif Central is a large dramatic area of wild mountains and plateaux made up of ancient granite. The area is also dotted with dormant volcanoes and popular with skiers.
The Languedoc enjoys a rich and colourful history of Catharism and the Knights Templar it has been made famous by films and books such as the Da Divinci Code. Many people flock to places such as Rennes-le-Château which can be found in the Aude department attracted by its mythical and mysterious past. There are many beautiful Châteaux and Cathar churches waiting to be explored.
