Auvergne: The Puy-de-Dôme and the Puys range

The Puys range

The Puys range and its 80 volcanoes stretching out in a north to south row nearly 80 kilometres long overlooks the regional capital, Clermont-Ferrand, and offers hikers, horse-riders and mountain bikers a wonderful playground where they can live the adventure they are looking for. The Puy-de-Dôme and the other puys, the local name for extinct volcanoes, are all different from one another. The Puys range which was once erupting, spewing lava an ash, has become a quiet, welcoming place where nature-lovers escape to get away from the stress of everyday life.

The Sancy Massif

Volcanoes and glaciers formed the Sancy Massif, in the heart of Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park, 20 million years ago. The range offers hikers stunning scenery—a mixture of gentle slopes, rugged cliffs and deep gorges. Three peaks are over 1,800 meters high, offering breathtaking views. The Sancy Massif boasts 650 kilometres of trails for all kinds of hiking. This huge, green area rich of numerous lakes, peat bogs, gorges and craters is a veritable geology lesson.

The Monts du Cantal

The 2,500 km² Monts du Cantal are Europe's biggest volcanic landscape. The grandiose plateaus, valleys, mountains and forests, inhabited by men with a forceful temperament, characterise Auvergne. The 12 glacial valleys radiating out from the 1,787 m Puy Mary like the spokes of a wheel offer stunning views.

Stevenson's and Modestine's trail

This trail follows in the footsteps of Robert-Louis Stevenson, who trekked across the Massif Central with his she-ass Modestine in 1878. The scenic route the famous Scottish writer travelled along between Velay and Gévaudan has been recreated as the GR70 so that people in love with nature and authentic, preserved landscapes can enjoy it.
