The
Aquitaine region lies in the southwest of France and it is made up of five
departments; Dordogne, Gironde, Landes, Lot-et-Garonne and the Pyrénées
Atlantiques. On its south-western coast Aquitaine meets the Atlantic Ocean, to
the south it borders the Pyrenees mountains and Spain.The landscape is one of golden sandy beaches along its coastline while the interior enjoys an abundance of mountains, rivers and pretty chateaux.
The climate varies being cooler in the mountain areas while the lowlands enjoy warm summers with the heat lingering well into November.
Bordeaux the regions capital is famous for its vineyards which produce some of the finest wines in the world. Bordeaux is situated in the northwest of the region on the coast and sits on a bend on the Garonne river. It is also an important port.
Owing to its beautiful landscape and kind climate he region is very popular with British expats particularly in the Dordogne department which is often referred to as Dordogneshire or Little Britain.
