Biarritz is one of Europe's most beautiful and stylish cities, resting on the
French/ Spanish border. This coastal town embraces three cultures (French,
Basque and Spanish) and its mild climate makes it a good year round
destination.Formerly a fisherman village, Biarritz has become a fashionable seaside resort and a vibrant cosmopolitan town with many luxury villas, magnificent beaches, golf courses and sporting facilities, not forgetting the surf. The area is famous for surfing and many surfing festivals are held up and down the coastline. In July, surfers from all over the world gather for the annual Biarritz Surf Festival. In addition to surfing, there are numerous other sporting facilities to enjoy such as rugby, horse-riding, golf, as well as other attractions such as galleries, museums and the towns shops and restaurants.
Biarritz Highlights
The Rocher de la Vierge and the Eiffel walkway: Napoleon III created the bridge linking Biarritz's coast to the massive rock just out to sea. In 1865 a statue of the Madonna was erected there. Gustave Eiffel replaced the original wooden walkway with a metal structure in 1887 and these days the bridge to the Rocher de la Vierge is a well-trodden route to one of Biarritz's best photo opportunities.Le Musée de la Mer: Built in 1935, the Biarritz Marine Museum is situated by the seashore, on top of the Rocher de la Vierge and has a large display of marine fauna and aquariums. The terrace at the Marine Museum offers picturesque views of the area’s landscape and coast, ripped by plenty of reefs and rocks.
