    Sharapova stunned by Kerber at Paris Open

    Top seed Maria Sharapova crashed out of the WTA Paris Open in the quarter-finals on Friday after falling 6-4, 6-4 to German ninth seed Angelique Kerber.

    Sharapova had breezed past Kerber in straight sets en route to the Australian Open final last month but the 24-year-old exacted sweet revenge on the world number three at a disbelieving Pierre de Coubertin indoor arena.

    Latvala leads way in Sweden

    Jari-Matti Latvala of Finland led the way in the Rally of Sweden, the second leg of the World Rally Championship, after afternoon action on the first full day Friday.

    Latvala, driving a Ford, was in early command after the first nine special stages having started out from Karlstad and then led the way across the border into Norway through to special stage nine.

    The Finn had a provisional 17.2sec lead over compatriot Mikko Hirvonen of Citroen despite the latter winning on his favoured terrain in the last two editions.

    India probes Google over 'forex transactions'

    Indian authorities are probing whether online giant Google broke domestic foreign-exchange transactions rules while shifting funds abroad, the Press Trust of India reported on Friday.

    Quoting unidentified sources, the news agency said India's Directorate of Enforcement, which monitors foreign exchange dealings, has informed Google about the probe.

    The department is scrutinising the shifting of money by Google to its foreign entities and also its receipt of funds from abroad, the news agency said.

    Google did not respond to telephone calls seeking comment.

    'Extremely Close' director calls for more 9/11 films

    The director of Oscar-nominated 9/11 drama "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close," Stephen Daldry, told the Berlin film festival Friday he was amazed by the scarcity of movies about the attacks.

    The 50-year-old British film-maker said a decade on, cinema still had little to say about the suicide hijackings in New York and Washington in which some 3,000 people were killed, as well as the ensuing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

    Nissan recalls 39,000 vehicles in US, Canada

    Nissan is recalling 39,000 vehicles in the United States and Canada to fix a problem with the gear shift, the Japanese automaker said Friday.

    "Due to interference between the shift rod and the shift knob, the vehicle may be shifted out of the park position without depressing the brake pedal," Nissan said in a letter to safety regulators.

    "The operator can inadvertently shift the vehicle into gear without the brake pedal being depressed, increasing the risk of a crash or injury to a nearby pedestrian.

    Alonso gives Ferrari boost

    Former double world champion Fernando Alonso clocked the fastest time on the final day of Formula One testing on Friday, ending a frustrating week for the Italian giants on a high.

    His time of 1min 18.877sec, off 39 laps, was good enough to keep out French driver Jean-Eric Vergne in the Toro Rosso, who timed 1:19.597 for second place.

    World champion Sebastian Vettel, in a Red Bull, was third fastest in 1:19.606 with former champion Lewis Hamilton taking fourth spot with a time of 1:19.640 in his McLaren.

    France: Air France resumes normal operations as strike ends

    Air France said on Friday that its services were returning to normal after a four-day staff strike over a draft law that would require workers to give 48 hrs notice before striking. The strike caused hundreds of flight cancellations.
