Martine Aubry has been elected the French Socialist Party leader beating rival Segolene Royal by just 42 votes. Martine Aubry is the Mayor of Lille in Northern France, once a government minister she is most famous for pushing forward the 35 hour week which became known as 'Loi Aubry'.
Supporters of Segolene Royal have called for a recount amidst allegations of vote rigging. The dispute has caused a huge split within the socialist Party with Ms Royal saying that she will take "all necessary political and legal steps" to force the party to re-run the ballot.
