Volcanic Ash Cloud Grounds all UK & French Flights

The Eyjafjallajokul volcano in Iceland - photo © Andreas TilleAll flights to and from the UK have been cancelled as a vast ash cloud from yesterday's Eyjafjallajokul volcano eruption in Iceland drifts towards the UK forcing all airports to close.

It is expected that airports in northern France may also close as the ash cloud is expected to move towards the Brittany and Normandy coastlines.

Although the ash cloud may not be visible to many in the UK and France tiny particles from the ash can cause aircraft engines to clog and fail and can even cause unseen damage that could affect the aircraft's engine in years to come.

The Met office has warned that flights may also be cancelled tomorrow as the ash cloud heads further south.

One compensation for disrupted travel plans could be spectacular sunsets especially in the North of the UK, Brittany and Normandy.
