Three Strikes and You're Off the Net

internetThe French senate has voted overwhelmingly in favour of legislation drawn up by Nicholas Sarkozy that gives illegal file sharers two warnings before disconnecting their internet access.

The proposed new law must now pass through the French National Assembly before getting final approval but if passed the proposal will mean that Internet Service Providers in France will have to closely monitor their customers online activities and give a warning to anyone engaging in illegal file sharing. Persistent sharers will receive a second warning and if they still continue will have their internet access withdrawn for up to 12 months.

Earlier this year Brussels rejected a Europe wide call for the three strikes and your out rule saying that disconnecting people from the internet conflicted with their civil liberties and human rights.
