Culture minister Christine Albanel said that the government wants to increase the maximum allowed amount of advertising from 6 to 9 minutes per hour.
Currently public television in France relies on advertising as part of its funding which also includes the annual 116 euro TV licence paid by householders.
As French TV is often accused of being the worst in Europe if not the world longer adverts may be viewed as a relief by some.
