World class skiing will be closer to the South West from next winter, as it's announced new flights to Chambery with Air Southwest from Plymouth and Newquay are on sale now.

Winter sports fans from across the region are able to book low fare flights from just £35 one way (including taxes) to the French gateway to the Alps. Due to the expected popularity of flights, customers are encouraged to book early to get the lowest fares and avoid disappointment.

Flights from Plymouth and Newquay to Chambery will start on 20 December 2008 through to March 2009 and will run once a week on Saturdays.

For an additional nominal charge, customers can also reserve in advance space for their skiing equipment.

Mike Coombes, deputy chief executive at Air Southwest said: "This is the first time we have offered flights to Chambery from the South West and I'm very confident they will prove extremely popular. Chambery and the surrounding area is a stunning destination to explore, whether you're a fan of skiing or not."

Chambery and the surrounding area appeals to both skiers and non-skiers. Chambery's old town includes a chateau that was once the residence of the dukes of Savoie, a 15th century cathedral and a fine arts museum. There are also three nearby natural parks including the stunning Parc des Bauges, a sparsely populated and little visited area of varied Alpine landscapes and abundant wildlife. Just north of Chambery is the elegant spa resort of Aix-Les-Bains, with its famous thermal baths.

The news comes as the South West's own low fare airline recently announced major increases in new routes from Newquay to Glasgow and Newcastle and from Plymouth to Cork, Dublin, Glasgow and Newcastle. All new flights are on sale now at www.airsouthwest.com.
