France is to introduce tough new laws in order to ban domestic violence. The government is also planning to conduct studies on the electronic tagging of violent partners in order to prevent them from stalking their victims or carrying out further attacks.

In a speech commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women Prime Minister Francois Fillon said that the new laws will also incorporate stiff penalties for acts of psychological violence and will make forced marriages illegal.

Last year alone 157 women in France were killed by their partners or husbands, these figures represented 16 percent of murders nationally. In the last 2 years there have been over 675,000 acts of violence against women by their partners or other close family members. While the subject of domestic violence remains taboo many more crimes go unreported.

The new laws will come into place during the early part of 2010.
