French woman marries boyfriend a year after his death

Wedding ringsA young French woman, 26-year old Magali Jaskiewicz has married her boyfriend a year after his death. Tragically her boyfriend Jonathan George died in a car crash just two days after the couple had finalised their wedding plans. They had been living together for several years and had two young children.

A little known law in France meant that she was able to file an official request to the president, Mr Sarkozy allowing her to marry her fiancée posthumously. The ceremony took place in Dommary-Baroncourt in the east of France and was attended by around 30 or so family members and close friends. Once the wedding ceremony was complete Magali sadly became a widow as well as a bride on the same day.

This piece of the civil code allows for posthumous marriages to take place provided that all of the legal preparations for the wedding were in place before either partner dies. All though uncommon it's believed that up to 10 posthumous marriages take place in France each year.
