The French nuclear safety watchdog ASN has suspended dismantling work at the Areva nuclear plant in Cadarache after several kilos of unaccounted for plutonium was discovered at the site.

The incident which is described as being level 2 on scale of 1 to 7 casts further doubt over France's nuclear safety policy. Although the excess plutonium was discovered earlier in June of this year it wasn't reported until last week.

The amount of plutonium discovered was enough to make several nuclear bombs should it have fallen into the wrong hands.
