Wave of Suicides by France Telecom Workers

France Telecom has come under heavy scrutiny after a wave of suicides by
staff members. During the last 18 months there have been over 20 suicides by
France Telecom workers many of whom left notes blaming the stress of working for
the company.
The latest suicide took place on Friday when a 32 year old woman tragically took her own life at the Paris offices of the telecom company. The woman jumped from a fourth storey window shortly after an office meeting.
Earlier this week a 48 year old worker stabbed himself in front of colleagues also in Paris after being told that his job was going to be restructured. He is being treated in hospital for stomach wounds.
On the 29th of August a 53 year old father of three from Lannion in Brittany killed himself, the man worked as a technician for France Telecom and his co workers blamed his suicide on the pressures of working for the company.
Also in August a 28 year old from Besançon took his own life, the man had left a note which mentioned how desperate he felt about issues at the company.
In July another worker a 52 year old man from Marseille killed himself, the man left a note in which he stated that the only reason he had taken his own life was because of his job at France Telecom.
Union members are calling for action and have staged protests at some France Telecom offices, they are heavily critical of the company which they claim has not done enough to tackle the problem, they also blamed chronic restructuring of the company since its privatisation which has seen many of its skilled workers reassigned to work in call centres or relocated to other parts of the country.
