All forms of heating in France are gynormously expensive!
If your doing up a house make sure you insulate every conceivable part of your house and then add more just to be sure! We thought we had adequate insulation and naively thought that just a wood burner to heat the house would be really economical and cosy. How wrong we were!
It takes about 7 cords (that's 3 cubic meters) of wood at 170 euros per cord to heat our small 2 bedroom cottage during the winter add on top of that electricity for heating water (also expensive in France) and our fuel bill just for the winter works out at about 1,800 euros - ouch!

... A cheaper way is to source a section of woodland from your mairie or local ONF office ( Office national des Forets) and they will let you cut and take a certain amount cheaply or for free in return for forest management. Very common around Josselin, Pledeliac and the Paimpont region where there are large areas of woodland run for the chasse. The real cost is in the labour! |

... Your cords seem a little small. According to our local forester a cord is 4 steres. (if that's how you spell it) In cord wood form that's a pile of 1.25 length spit logs stacked 1.25 high and twice as long. (almost identical to the cord in USA and UK, 4' x 4' x 8') Stacked as fire wood it would take only a little less space Brittany is another country in so many ways, so perhaps they use a different size where you are. If so I'll crawl back under a log and go to sleep again. |
