Come on baby light my fire...

I have an old and ancient French wood burning stove that came with the house, it's a deom or as I prefer to call it Demon. It's pretty useless except as an incinerator, there's no glass door so you can't feel cosy viewing the flames and the wood goes in the top. I hate it with a passion.

demon.jpgThis week I've been struggling to light the damn thing, mostly due to dampish wood and the fact that it's top loading. It's best to keep it burning 24hrs a day but too expensive to run. Yesterday after struggling for at least an hour I decided I'd had enough and remembering once catching a chip pan on fire when I was younger I hatched a cunning plan.

My homemade firelighter recipe was as follows:

Take 1 full hoover bag.

1 Stuff it further with as much waste paper as possible.
2 Place inside wood burner (hole pointing up), nestled between a couple of logs.
3 Take 1/2 litre of used chip oil and pour inside hoover bag.
4 Strike match.
5 Toss match inside wood burner and Voila! or rather WHOOSH! or maybe HOLY SMOKE!
My fire now alight I decide to take my dogs for a walk, feeling somewhat naked without my eyebrows I noticed that the smell of chip fat lingered in the breeze for at least half a kilometre.

They tell me a 50gal oil drum is efficient, you could try that. Just an aside, but are there only 2 people contributing to this site or am I just not pressing the correct keys?

The oil drum would probably look more attractive too :) I think there might be more than 2 people - have you tried the forum?

Hi. I enjoyed your story, first of all, and I'd like to apologize ahead of time if the rest of this message makes me sound like a complete jackass. I am an American from Virginia and I am moving to Paris (3 months at a time, so far) in a week. I don't speak French, although I had 3 years of it in high school, that was well over 10 years ago and I remember nothing. I am searching for other Americans/English/Irish/Scotts in Paris frantically!!!! My boyfriend has been living in Paris for 8 years, but he has to travel a lot and I will have plenty of free time to see Paris ON MY OWN. This is obviously scary to me, given the history of Americans and French people. My point is, I'd like to have some English speaking friends to hang out with.I plan to learn French, but friends would be a great help. Do you have any suggestions on where to start? How long have you been in Paris? Please contact me via e-mail ojiggy@hotmail.com Thank You so so much. I am excited about moving and I can't wait for the wine!
