France on Two Wheels

France on Two WheelsFor Adam Ruck, France and cycling go together like ripe camembert and Bordeaux... In this book he undertakes six journeys through the most beautiful French regions - Paris to Avignon, Lake Geneva to Normandy, down the Loire from its source to the sea (two rides), Biarritz to Burgundy, and through the Tarn gorges from the Cevennes to the Atlantic.

Eschewing lycra in favour of shorts and sandals, he and friends roll along at ten miles an hour the perfect way, as he says, to explore rural France. Each ride takes about a week, with frequent pauses to taste wine, swim in a river, and investigate subjects as varied as lace making, pelota, Roquefort, Flaubert and the pilgrimage to Compostela.

Adding insight to anecdote, France on Two Wheels is packed with practical tips: on rail travel with a bicycle, mending a puncture in French, and the best stopovers along the route small hotels, B&Bs and châteaux, every one a cultural treasure worth celebrating.
