The author has spent over 35 years in and around France, during most of which time he was practicing as a lawyer. His work brought him into contact with many English-speaking people living in France or who owned property there. He acquired an insight into the main problems they encountered, both at a technical legal level and at a personal level. He noticed that things frequently went wrong for them because they did not understand the system or the people. They thought that things in France should be as they are at home and had difficulty in coping when they found they were not.
The book should help avoid some of these difficulties and at the same time provide an insight into the main ground rules governing any involvement in French property or business activities.
It also helps the outsider understand something of French culture and life, as well as the everyday practicalities, with an overview of the government and the political system, the legal system and the courts, personal taxation and social security, pensions, schooling and further education and much else.
It is not a complete reference work with the answers to all problems French. It does not have all the detailed information appearing in some other publications, but It should give the reader in an easily digestible form an understanding of what he will be up against in France and enable him to ask the right questions of the right people and to know what to look for, what to expect and what to avoid. It will help him to get the right detailed advice from the right experts.
